On Tuesday, November 3, Loyola Academy students, faculty and staff gathered for an all-school Mass celebrated by Most Rev. Timothy J. O’Malley ’78, auxiliary bishop of Chicago. The liturgy marked All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day and anticipated the November 5 Feast of All Saints and Blesseds of the Society of Jesus.

In his homily, Bishop O’Malley reflected on Allhallowtide, the three-day observance that begins with All Hallows’ Eve on October 31 and continues with All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day. He connected the observance to the call to love our neighbors as ourselves, the example of the saints and the prayers we offer for those who have died.

Bishop O’Malley pointed to an act of service familiar to Ramblers: making peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for people experiencing hunger through the Gonzaga Lunch Program. He invited students to see the face of Christ in the people they serve and to consider how ordinary acts of care can help them grow in holiness. He also encouraged the community to remember family members and friends who have died by writing their names in the remembrance book in the chapel.

Loyola Academy President Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ, and Rev. Stan Czarnecki, SJ, concelebrated the Mass, with Deacon Karol Cygan, SJ, assisting.

Loyola Academy thanks the students, faculty and staff who helped prepare and celebrate the Mass, including the lectors who proclaimed Scripture, the Eucharistic ministers who helped distribute Holy Communion and the music ministers who led the community in song.
