Inaugural Class of Bowman Scholars Gather for Family Retreat

The Bowman Scholars Program was established in 2020 to provide programming and assistance for high achieving, first-generation and under-resourced students. The program is named for Sister Thea Bowman (1937–1990), FSPA, who was a missionary disciple and advocate for cultural awareness and racial harmony.

 

The retreat kicked off in the morning with an opening prayer and remarks by Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ. Assistant Principal for Student Services Mrs. Terri S. Jackson discussed what it means to be a Bowman Scholar and faculty & staff members involved with the program introduced themselves such as Director of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion & School Counselor Mrs. Sarah Bennett and College Counselor Mr. Jamie Simon. Then, the group moved to the theater where they heard from motivational speaker David Gibson, author and founder of Elevation is a Must (EiAM), a personal development and self improvement company. 

 

A series of icebreakers and classroom activities followed that encouraged discussion, emphasized self-advocacy and helped students begin to navigate their LA experience. A campus tour and scavenger hunt led by upperclassmen provided a fun way for incoming Bowman Scholars to learn more about the school they will call home for the next four years. 

 

Before a beautiful lunch outside at Sachs Stadium, there was a student panel and the chance to ask questions and learn more about LA from current students. Notably, alumni speakers Joyce Matanguihan ’19, Claudia Pensamiento ’19 and Gabby Tewodros ’19 participated in the panel and talked about the transition from grade school to Loyola, their experiences in high school and their preparedness for college after Loyola. 

 

“At the very heart and foundation of the Bowman Scholars Program is our deep commitment to partner with the parents and guardians of our scholars,” said Jackson. “Our goal is to walk side by side with them as companions on this journey. We will have events in the future we hope families will attend to continue to get to know the program, to get involved, and to help us to better serve and empower Loyola Academy’s Bowman Scholars.”
