Mock Trial Team Captures Howlett Cup for Third Consecutive Year
For the third year in a row, the Loyola Academy Mock Trial Team captured first place at the Howlett Cup Competition! In addition, two out of three of the tournament's individual awards went to Loyola students.
This year's individual award winners include Marirose Osborne '18 for Best Advocate–Defense and TJ Lindstrom '19 for Best Witness.
Now in its fifth year, the competition attracts talented teams of students from a numberof Chicago’s Catholic high schools including Loyola Academy, St. Ignatius College Prep, Christ the King, Cristo Rey Chicago, Cristo Rey Waukegan, Fenwick and Mt. Carmel. For students, the competition is a wonderful opportunity to gain experience in front of a real judge and a jury of attorneys and other legal professionals.
Since the tournament’s inception in 2014 by Conor J. Heaton ’96, the winning title has toggled between Loyola Academy (championships in 2014, 2016, 2017 and 2018) and St. Ignatius (championship in 2015).
Loyola’s team is led by head coach Mark A. Javier ’97, supervising investigator at the Civilian Office of Police Accountability (COPA). Loyola graduate parent Erica Dillon and alumni John A. Ouska III '73 and Catherine C. Howlett '02 assist Javier as coaches. Notably, Catherineis the daughter of the late Judge Michael J. Howlett Jr. for whom the competition is named.
