Loyola Celebrates Diversity at International Night

The capstone event of Diversity Week is International Night, an annual celebration of the unique cultures and traditions that enrich our Loyola community.
Guests at this year’s International Night enjoyed an array of performances with ethnic music and traditional dress from a number of Loyola’s cultural clubs including:
  • A hula and Tinikling, a traditional Filipino dance with bamboo sticks, performed by the Asian Youth Group
  • A fashion show and Ethiopian and Eritrean dances performed by the African American Youth Group
  • A fun raffle coordinated by the Italian Club
  • A poem recital and a Cumbia, Merengue and Bachata performed by the Hispanic Youth Group
  • A traditional folk song sung by the Polish Club moderators
  • A Tai Chi demonstration by the Chinese Club
  • A recital of a children’s book by a member of the Spanish Honors Society
“Dancing during I-night with all the different cultural clubs is so amazing because the experience signifies the unity and equality present within our clubs that we hope to relate to society,” reflects junior Bryan Ruz, co-leader of the Asian Youth Group. “It's great seeing all the hard work the clubs put into their performances.”

“My favorite part about preparing for International Night was coming up with new movements and being able to teach the group dance,” says senior Jaelin Macedo, who choreographed the dances for the Hispanic Youth Group along with classmate Sabrina Taylor ’17. “We were really proud of how everything came together nicely, and extremely proud of the group for performing the dance well.”

The theme of Diversity Week 2017 was “From Where I Stand.” Every year International Night captures several of the many diverse perspectives and traditions that we celebrate at Loyola Academy.
