IDSA Award Recipients
Last week's Illinois Directors of Student Activities (IDSA) conference was a celebration of dedication and excellence, particularly shining a spotlight on the outstanding faculty and staff of Loyola Academy who were honored for their contributions to student activities.
Nicole Roman, teacher in the Social Studies department, was recognized for her exceptional commitment as a new student activity advisor. Stepping into the role of moderator for the DECA chapter at Loyola, Nicole embarked on a journey without fully knowing the challenges ahead. However, her dedication and guidance proved invaluable as she led her students through competitions, with an impressive 11 solo or duos medaling at Regionals and two qualifying for Nationals. Despite the uncertainties of launching a new organization, Nicole supported a cohort of 40 students, navigating them through the exciting but often daunting world of DECA.
Michelle Denic, executive assistant to the president, was acknowledged for her five years of devoted service as the moderator of the Polish Club at Loyola Academy. Under her guidance, the club flourished, attracting more members and fostering a deep appreciation for Polish heritage within the school community. Michelle's coordination of family-oriented events, such as the wigilia and Easter egg pisanki, showcased her dedication to enriching cultural experiences. Additionally, her encouragement of creativity, especially evident in choreographing dances for International Night, elevated the club's contributions year after year.
Amanda Pagnotta, teacher Languages department, was lauded for her remarkable involvement as the moderator of five different clubs over several years. Her dedication and passion were evident in the growth of each club she oversaw. From Adventure Games, providing a welcoming space for D&D enthusiasts, to the Hellenic Group sharing their culture during International Night, Amanda's leadership empowered students to explore their interests and showcase their talents. Furthermore, her initiatives, such as the school-wide Language Olympics organized by the Classics Club, demonstrated her commitment to fostering diverse and engaging experiences for students.
In recognition of her unwavering commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, Bea Shoular, safety officer, was honored for her exceptional leadership of the African American Youth Group at Loyola Academy. For nineteen years, Bea has provided a nurturing and supportive environment for the group's 85 members, offering opportunities for connection, celebration, and empowerment. Through events like Black History Month and participation in International Night, Bea has cultivated a sense of belonging and pride among students, leaving an indelible impact on their lives.
The IDSA conference served as a fitting platform to honor these exemplary faculty and staff members from Loyola Academy, whose dedication and passion have enriched the lives of students and strengthened the school community.
