Loyola Partners with Wintrust to Offer Students Business Academy

This summer’s inaugural Wintrust Business Academy provided students with a summer experience that enabled them to encounter learning opportunities in business, financial literacy, entrepreneurial concepts, career connections, networking and mentorship. Over thirty rising sophomores, juniors and seniors participated in the one-week virtual workshop June 8–12.
For two and a half hours each morning, Ramblers met virtually with speakers from the Loyola community including alumni Connor Detjen ’06, loan officer at Wintrust Ventures, and George Kaiser ’78, Wintrust Mortgage branch manager, as well as Loyola parents Doug Boersma, president of Wintrust Bank, and Tom Zidar, chairman & CEO of Wintrust Wealth Management.

Key topics included personal finance and investment goals, finance careers, credit scores, asset building, and organizational types for small businesses. Students also received tips on best practices for start-ups, business plans, and how to give a 30 second pitch.

At the conclusion of the week, students left the class better informed about possible career options in the banking and finance industry.  Additionally, learning about credit scores and personal finance gave them the tools to venture into college better equipped to manage their finances for the long term.

Vice President of Alumni Network and Engagement Marty Jennings ’98 hatched the idea to connect students with industry leaders at Wintrust. “We were thrilled to bring this experience to our students,” he says. “The feedback we received gave us a sense that our students really enjoyed this opportunity, and we are hopeful to bring it to the next level in future summers.”

Along with the summer internship program also launched this year, Loyola’s Wintrust Academy expands the opportunities for professional formation for current students and provides them with a great foundation by working with partners in our community.

“The goal is to build engaging and insightful learning moments for our students in the months ahead,” adds Jennings.

We are grateful to our friends at Wintrust Community Banks for helping to make this pilot program possible amid the challenges of a pandemic. For more information, contact Marty Jennings ’98 at mjennings@loy.org
