Art Symbolizes Students' Personal Experience during COVID-19

Graphic design and honors studio III art students have been creating pieces from home that respond to the current COVID-19 crisis. To get started on the assignment, Visual Arts Teacher Mr. Keith Brown asked his students to make art that symbolizes their lives under the current stay-at-home orders.

“In this project we will return to our conceptual development framework inside of the artistic process,” Brown explained and he introduced the project to his students. To help them approach their work, Brown encouraged the use of two conceptual strategies: list making and thought mapping.

In the first component, list making, Brown had students articulate five of the most prominent feelings and questions they have related to their personal experience of the crisis. In the second component, students visually represented these feelings and questions by constructing thought maps.

The assignment enabled students to take an introspective perspective and contemplate the personal impact of this global issue.
