The Class of 1969 Celebrates 50th Reunion

Members of the Class of 1969 gathered to celebrate their 50th Rambler Reunion over a fun-filled weekend on September 13 and 14. Special in many ways, the Class of 1969 is recognized for exceeding $2M in cumulative lifetime giving.
On Friday, alumni enjoyed a day of golf hosted by Michael Walsh ’69 at Indian Hill Country Club in Winnetka followed by a lively cocktail party where former classmates traded stories and laughs, recounting their days spent at the Academy from 1965–1969.

On Saturday, the Class of 1969 received special recognition between quarters of the Loyola vs. St. Rita varsity football game. The ’69 grads also enjoyed VIP tours of the school—including the new John D. Norcross ’54 Aquatic Center and the Piazza—from Loyola staff members and a pregame tailgate with classmates and friends.

“What stood out the most was the tour of the school,” says Larry Baer ’69. “I was very impressed with the available opportunities for all Loyola students. Everything I saw and heard made me proud of my Loyola Academy heritage.”

Following the game, Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, celebrated the 50th Reunion Mass in the Chapel. Frank Ursini ’69, Mike Walsh ’69, John Dore ’69 and Bill Hogan ’69 read the names of classmates who have passed away, honoring their legacy with a quiet moment during Mass. Special thanks to Pat Caruso ’69, Larry Baer ’69 and Dr. John Ortinau ’69 for serving as readers and current student Jack Nimesheim ’20 for delivering a beautiful reflection.

Next, '69 alumni took a photo in the East Gym to commemorate their reunion before heading off to the class party in Loyola’s Piazza, a spectacular new multi-purpose space adjacent to the pool. Vice President for Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98 welcomed alumni and their guests and led with an opening prayer before dinner was served. After dinner, Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Ashley K. Sanks ’10 introduced Richard Kelly ’69, who addressed his classmates before conversations and laughter continued into the late evening hours.

“I continue to be in awe of just how these guys, whom I knew fifty years ago as knuckleheads, developed into truly wonderful people of high character,” reflects Pat Caruso ’69. “When I tell people that I am still in close contact with high school pals, they are stunned. I believe this is rare. How truly blessed we are.”
