1962 Alumni Tour New Pool and Piazza

Several members of the Class of 1962 received a preview of Loyola’s new John D. Norcross ’54 Aquatic Center and adjacent Piazza in July, just weeks before its official grand opening celebration.
“All I can say about the swimming complex and the Piazza is wow!” said Tom Blake ’62.

Along the way, the group of ’62 alumni also ran into Head Football Coach John Holecek, who stopped briefly to chat.  “I’m impressed by his humility and the way he talks about his players—not as gridiron terrors of some sort but as good citizens, good community people, etc.  I feel the LA community is very fortunate to have a man like this,” Blake added.

Following the tour, which included a brief look at the new STEAM Lab, classmates discussed these milestone in the history of Loyola Academy together at lunch where Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Ashley Sanks ’10 shared the first renderings of the forthcoming theater—the capstone project of Phase 2 of Loyola’s Campus Master Plan.

“I’m very thankful that Loyola is making a major commitment to the performing arts, especially in light of the fact that this country’s educational system has turned its back on the arts for so many years,” Blake reflects. “My wife Diane and I attend many live performances ranging from the Lyric Opera and the Chicago Symphony Orchestra to Ravinia, Chicago Shakespeare Theater, Goodman Theater, Writer’s Theater, Music Theater Works (headquartered right here in Wilmette) and many others.  Unfortunately, the story is the same at all of them—the audience keeps getting older and few young people are replacing the older attendees.  Hopefully, Loyola’s initiative will spark an interest to explore the arts.  A life-long world of riches awaits those who do so.”

Loyola Academy wishes to recognize the generous support of the Class of 1962 in helping to make our vision a reality. To learn more about Loyola’s Second Century Campaign and Campus Master Plan, click here.
