Ramblers "Crush the Pool" and Look Forward to the John D. Norcross '54 Aquatic Center

On Wednesday, June 27, pool benefactors, coaches, aquatic alumni and students gathered outside the athletic lobby in front of Loyola's I.A. O'Shaughnessy Pool to bid a fond farewell to the pool that has served the Rambler community for over fifty years.
“It was wonderful to see so much of our community involved in our ‘Crush the Pool’ party and you could feel the passion and excitement about what lies ahead,” says Executive Vice President Dennis R. Stonequist ’90. “It never hurts to have a crane operator smash a wall of a sixty year old pool for dramatic effect...what a beautiful night.”

Ramblers gathered to witness the first step of the demolition of the O’Shaughnessy Pool. The first one hundred attendees received a tile from the pool—a nostalgic take-away—and all guests were given construction hats to commemorate the event.

“I hope guests took in the moment and realized that they are a part of something special,” Stonequist continues. “And by that, I don't just mean the swimming pool. I mean the community that surrounded us at the event, the community that we have built together over the years.”

"It was great to see the guys who showed up from my era of swimming and to see some of the old guys I knew, too," says Ryan Kehoe '94. "It's always fun catching up and reconnecting with old friends."

Young alumna and former swimmer Michelle Garland ’12 also enjoyed reconnecting with old teammates and coaches at the event. When the crane took the first crack at the building, a whirlwind of emotions came over me!” she says. “That pool provided so many things that I am grateful for, and I wouldn’t be the person I am today if it weren’t for my experience at Loyola. I look forward to what will come with the changes. A lot of talent has come out of this program, and I think the new pool will only bring more. Go Ramblers!”
