Loyola Academy Announces Next Chapter in Football Leadership

Loyola Academy is pleased to announce the next chapter in its football leadership. John Holecek will return as head coach of the varsity football team, while Beau Desherow ’93 has been named football program general manager and assistant head coach. Together, the two veteran leaders will work in close partnership to guide the program forward while building upon Loyola’s tradition of excellence.
"Loyola Academy is fortunate to have outstanding leaders who are deeply committed to our Jesuit mission," said Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ, president of Loyola Academy. "John and Beau's shared dedication to developing the physical, spiritual, and emotional strength of our student-athletes reflects what it truly means to be men for others. We couldn’t be more thrilled to have such a remarkable duo leading our program."

Desherow has led the Ramblers for the past three seasons, compiling a 30–7 record and guiding the program to back-to-back IHSA 8A State Championships in 2023 and 2024. A two-time Chicago Catholic League Lawless Coach of the Year, he has been instrumental in fostering a culture defined by accountability, discipline, and care for one another, grounded in Loyola's Jesuit mission.

A longtime member of the Loyola community, Desherow's connection to the program spans more than 25 years—as a former player, assistant coach, and head sophomore coach. He will continue to serve as assistant athletic director and director of summer sports camps while expanding his impact in this new role. As general manager and assistant head coach, he will support all facets of the program and help ensure continued success across all levels.

"Beau has been an outstanding leader of this program and a steady presence for our students," said Vice President for Athletics and Fitness Genevieve Atwood. "His ability to build relationships, develop talent, and lead with integrity has been central to our recent success, and his expanded role will be invaluable as we continue to strengthen the program."

Holecek returns to the head coaching role after a three-year break, during which he remained deeply connected to Loyola through his work with the Advancement Department and his continued involvement with the football program as varsity linebackers coach.

From 2006 to 2022, Holecek led Loyola to sustained national prominence, compiling a 185–36 record over 17 seasons. His teams reached seven IHSA 8A State Finals and captured three state championships, while qualifying for the playoffs every year during his tenure.

"John has elevated our football program to national prominence," said Atwood. "His legacy is defined not only by competitive success, but by the way he develops students as leaders of character, humility, and purpose."

A former standout linebacker at the University of Illinois and an eight-year NFL veteran, Holecek brings both elite playing experience and a deep understanding of leadership rooted in mission.

"This program has always meant a great deal to me, and I'm grateful for the opportunity to step back into this role," said Holecek. "Working alongside Beau and our staff, we're focused on continuing to raise the standard and creating an environment where our students can grow, compete, and thrive."

"It has been a privilege to lead this program over the past three years," added Desherow. "I'm grateful to continue serving Loyola in this new role and to work alongside John and our staff. We have a strong foundation in place, and I’m excited about what we can continue to build together for our players and for the entire Loyola community."

This leadership structure reflects Loyola Academy's commitment to providing a transformative experience through athletics. The new alignment positions the program to build upon its tradition while continuing to form students for lives of purpose and service.
