Chinatown Field Trip Brings Learning a Language to Life
On March 25, Loyola Academy students in Chinese 1 and Chinese 4 stepped beyond the classroom and into the vibrant streets of Chinatown with their Chinese language teacher Ms. Xueting Ji, for a day of immersive, real-world learning.
Through a guided cultural tour, Ramblers explored the neighborhood's rich history and traditions while gaining a deeper understanding of Chinese culture. Along the way, they practiced their Mandarin skills by interacting with local shopkeepers and community members. This unique experience helped bring their studies to life in authentic and meaningful ways.
The visit also included hands-on opportunities to engage with daily life in Chinatown, from sampling traditional foods to browsing local markets. These moments allowed students to connect language with culture, building both confidence and curiosity.
"Our students returned to Loyola's campus energized and inspired, with a stronger appreciation for the Chinese language and the communities where it is spoken," Ms. Ji shared. "This field trip offered a memorable reminder that learning extends far beyond the classroom, and that meaningful connections are often found through shared experiences."
