Loyola Academy Certamen Team Wins IHSA Northern Regional Championship, Advances to State Finals
Loyola Academy's Upper Level (advanced Latin) Certamen team captured first place at the IHSA Northern Regional competition on March 10, earning the title of Northern Regional Champions and securing a spot in the IHSA State Finals on Wednesday, April 29 at Lyons Township High School.
Certamen—derived from the Latin word for "contest"—is a fast-paced academic competition centered on the study of Latin language, literature, Roman history, mythology, and classical culture. Teams compete in a quiz-bowl style format, answering questions that test both quick recall and deep knowledge of the ancient world. The competition challenges students not only to master the Latin language but also to think critically and collaborate effectively under pressure.
Loyola's Upper Level team delivered an outstanding performance throughout the regional tournament, defeating strong competitors from New Trier High School, North Side College Prep, and Stevenson High School to claim the regional title. The championship team included junior Juan Carlos Chiwah and seniors Jenna Crosswhite, Will Doonan, Jackson Humphrey, and Ben Olsen.
With the regional victory, the Ramblers will now advance to the IHSA State Finals, where they will compete against the Chicago city champions as well as the champions from the eastern, western, and southern regions of Illinois.
"We’re proud of our performance," said Olsen. "But we'll have our work cut out for us at State. We just faced some of the teams we'll see at the Illinois Junior Classical League Certamen, where we finished third. For most of us, this is our last year at Loyola, and we’d like to leave as champions."
The team's success reflects months of preparation and a deep commitment to the study of the classical world. Through competitions like Certamen, Loyola students strengthen their academic curiosity, teamwork, and intellectual discipline—hallmarks of the school’s tradition of rigorous scholarship and formation of thoughtful leaders.
The Ramblers will look to build on their regional success when they compete for the state championship later this spring.
