Winter Orchestra Concert Highlights Student Talent and Musical Collaboration

Loyola Academy's Winter Orchestra Concert filled the McGrath Family Performing Arts Center with an evening of vibrant music on March 5, as students from the Beginning Strings, Symphony Orchestra, and Honors Orchestra shared their talents with the Loyola community. Under the direction of Orchestra Director Patrick Rustandi, the program offered a rich and varied repertoire that reflected the growth and dedication of Loyola’s young musicians.
The concert opened with beloved works including Johann Pachelbel's Canon and Ave Maria, featuring Mr. Rustandi performing violin and viola solos. The performance set a reflective tone for the evening and highlighted the collaboration between students and their director.

As the program progressed, the Symphony and Honors Orchestra presented more advanced repertoire demonstrating the ensemble’s developing artistry. Among the highlights was Allegro Appassionato featuring cello soloist Daniel Malan '26, whose performance showcased both technical precision and expressive musicianship. A quartet of violinists also performed Georg Philipp Telemann's Concerto for Four Violins, an energetic piece that emphasized balance, coordination, and musical dialogue among the performers.

Chamber music selections further enriched the evening’s program. Students performed Franz Schubert's March Militaire for violin, cello, and piano and Antonín Dvořák's Bagatelle for piano quartet, offering audiences a more intimate listening experience while highlighting the collaborative spirit of chamber performance.

The concert concluded with lively orchestral favorites that brought the evening to a spirited finish. Selections from Georges Bizet’s Carmen Suite featured soprano Jenna Crosswhite '26, while Aaron Copland's Hoe-Down from Rodeo delivered an energetic finale that captured the excitement and vitality of the orchestra.

Together, the performances reflected the many hours of preparation and dedication invested by Loyola’s student musicians. The Winter Orchestra Concert served not only as a celebration of their musical achievements but also as a testament to the joy of shared performance and the vibrant arts community at Loyola Academy.
