Bowman First Gen Leaders Reflect on Purpose and Possibility at Inaugural Bowman Quo Vadis
Loyola Academy's Bowman First Generation Leaders gathered on Thursday, February 12, for the inaugural Bowman Quo Vadis, an afternoon designed to inspire reflection, mentorship, and meaningful conversation about life beyond high school. Hosted in the McGrath Family Performing Arts Center, the program invited Rambler juniors and seniors to consider a question rooted in Jesuit tradition: Quo Vadis? — "Where are you going?"
The event brought together students and three accomplished Chicago-area professionals who shared their experiences navigating college and careers as first-generation leaders: Partner at Ballard Partners and Founder of Alvarez & Associates Michael Alvarez P '27,'29; Vice President and General Counsel at Crystal Clean Lebene Hormeku P '26; and Manager of Social Impact at CDW Brandon Ruffin.
Following a casual lunch provided by Chicago-based Ballyhoo Hospitality and Alvarez & Associates, students participated in a moderated panel discussion led by Loyola Academy Senior Aman Yohannes '26, whose thoughtful questions guided a conversation centered on purpose, resilience, and building confidence in unfamiliar spaces.
Alvarez encouraged students to approach their futures with curiosity and intention, emphasizing that leadership often begins with small steps. "Your story matters — even when you feel like you’re just getting started," Alvarez shared."The relationships you build and the risks you’re willing to take will shape opportunities you can't yet see."
Hormeku reflected on her journey into the legal profession and the importance of remaining open to unexpected paths. She spoke candidly about the role of perseverance and faith in navigating life's challenges. "You don't need to have everything figured out today," Hormeku told students. "What matters is always showing up early and prepared, staying grounded in your values, and believing that your perspective belongs in every room you enter."
Ruffin offered insight into finding authenticity within the corporate world, encouraging students to view their identities and lived experiences as strengths rather than barriers. "Change is constant," Ruffin said. "The key is knowing who you are and why you do what you do. When you stay rooted in that purpose, you can walk into any space with confidence."
Throughout the discussion, common themes emerged — the power of mentorship, the importance of networking and cultivating relationships, and the role of service and community in shaping meaningful careers. Panelists spoke about internships, personal setbacks, and pivotal conversations that helped redirect their paths, reinforcing the idea that growth often comes through moments of uncertainty. All three panelists emphasized a familiar mantra that every Rambler already knows — there is no substitute for hard work!
Students engaged deeply as the panelists discussed challenges they faced, including overcoming imposter syndrome, college paths and choices, and how to balance ambition with personal well-being. The conversation created space for honest reflection and connection, allowing Bowman First Gen Leaders to see their own aspirations reflected in the journeys of those who came before them.
For Yohannes, serving as moderator was both an honor and a meaningful learning experience. "The panel was amazing, and the connections I made are immeasurable. My biggest takeaway was to just put your head down, stay curious, and to prepare meticulously."
As the inaugural event came to a close, students left with new perspectives, practical advice, and a renewed sense of confidence in their own journeys. Senior Habeebat Alatise '26 shared: "I enjoyed the feeling of empowerment I left with after the Bowman Quo Vadis event. Our moderator, Aman, did a wonderful job keeping the momentum going. I also noted how each speaker left something for us to take note of: Be authentically yourself, stay grounded in your values, and most of all, work hard, stay consistent, and always ask before giving yourself a no."
