Chinese Classes Welcome the Year of the Horse

Loyola Academy’s Chinese language students are joyfully preparing to celebrate Lunar New Year on February 17, welcoming the Year of the Horse with creativity, community, and cultural discovery.
In the days leading up to the holiday, classrooms have been transformed with vibrant red lanterns and traditional red couplets—symbols of good fortune and renewal for the year ahead. Students have explored the meaning behind these decorations, learning how language, poetry, and symbolism come together in this important cultural tradition.

The celebration has also included hands-on experiences. Students worked together to make dumplings, a beloved Lunar New Year food that represents unity and prosperity. Sharing the meal provided a meaningful opportunity to connect language learning with lived cultural practice.

In honor of the Year of the Horse, students crafted rocking horses inspired by the zodiac symbol for 2026. Through these activities, they deepened their understanding of the Chinese zodiac and reflected on the qualities associated with the horse—energy, strength, and perseverance.

By engaging in these traditions, our students are not only developing their language skills but also growing in cultural awareness and global understanding—an essential part of a Loyola education.
