Clavius and Dumbach Scholars Programs Welcome Newest Inductees with Special Mass
On Sunday, September 7, the Dumbach and Clavius Scholars inducted their newest members during a wonderful Mass presided over by Loyola Academy President Rev. Gregory J. Ostdiek, SJ. These enrichment programs are designed to enhance the curriculum of Loyola’s most gifted and motivated students.
The Dumbach Scholars Program curriculum is grounded in Socratic discussions of topics in the humanities and the arts, and calls students to approach their studies as Renaissance learners. While the Clavius Scholars Program focuses on students interested in math and science, and works to form them with a critical appreciation of the scientific process and inquiry. Both programs feature interdisciplinary field trips designed to bring topics covered in the classroom to life, including visits to museums, cultural outings, laboratory tours, environmental field experiences, and other hands-on activities.
At the Induction Mass, seniors Ben Olsen (Dumbach) and Michaela Burm (Clavius) shared a few remarks with the newest inductees, offering some encouragement while reflecting on the ways their respective programs have transformed their love of learning.
"This three-year journey might have begun as something to add to your college application, but it has the potential to be so much more than that. What you learn here can grow you as a person and change the way you see school, if you let it. Give this program a hundred percent of your effort," said Olsen.
"Through this program, I learned to escape my comfort zone inside and outside of the classroom. Whether it was through books, research articles, statistics projects, and movies," added Burm in her remarks. "Clavius has exposed me to so many opportunities, and I encourage you all to take them on with open minds and curiosity."
After Mass, students and their families gathered in the Ignatian Lobby to enjoy donuts and coffee.
These two programs would not be possible without the dedication of Program Directors Ms. Lesley Shifrin (Dumbach) and Ms. Valerie Galloway (Clavius) to curating meaningful learning experiences for students.
