Girls' Varsity Tennis Takes Third at IHSA Sectionals; Hewitt Advances to State

Loyola Academy finished in third place at the Glenbrook South Sectional on Thursday and Friday last week. The Ramblers were highlighted by sophomore Caroline Hewitt '28, who placed third in singles and qualified for the state tournament, which starts Thursday, October 23. In the third-place match against Rolling Meadows, Hewitt was down a set and at 0-3 in the second before mounting an impressive comeback, winning 2-6, 7-5, 6-1.
In the other singles flight, Emilia Nelson '26 fell just short of qualifying after running into a tough opponent early in the draw.

In doubles, Molly Minahan '28 and Thea Yordan '27 battled hard but lost to the top-seeded Glenbrook North team, 6-3, 6-0, in the qualifying round. The pair finished the season with an impressive 15–5 record together.

At first doubles, Lizzie Baskfield '26 and Ainsley Schachman '27 opened the tournament with a dominant win over Wheeling before facing Glenbrook North in the qualifying round. Despite a strong fight, they fell 6-3, 6-4. Baskfield and Schachman close the season with a 20–10 record and a 9th-place finish out of 32 teams at the highly competitive Buffalo Grove Invite in September.

Baskfield ends her career with 57 varsity wins across three seasons and is a two-time conference champion. Schachman, with 55 career wins already through just three seasons, is on pace to become the winningest player of the past decade in the program.

Way to go, Ainsley and Lizzie, and congratulations to the entire team on a great sectional performance!
