Seniors Deepen Faith Through Ignatian Journey Retreat at LUREC
From January 26–28, 162 seniors enrolled in The Ignatian Journey theology elective stepped away from the rhythms of campus life to participate in a course retreat at Loyola University's Retreat and Ecology Campus (LUREC) in Woodstock. Rooted in the spirituality of St. Ignatius, the experience invited students into prayer, reflection, and discernment through the movements of the Spiritual Exercises.
Over the course of the retreat, students engaged in guided meditations, quiet reflection, small-group conversation, and time in nature—creating space to listen more attentively to God's presence in their lives and to reflect on the decisions ahead.
Adam Dirnberger, one of the course teachers and retreat directors commented, "This retreat serves as an intentional pause at the heart of our course to remember who and Whose they are as they enter into deeper discernment about their life after Loyola decisions."
For many students, the retreat offered both spiritual depth and meaningful connection. "This retreat was an amazing opportunity to connect with God, but also myself. It allowed me to reflect on upcoming decisions, different life experiences, and where I see God’s presence in my life." said senior Maggie Schomer. "Not only was I able to connect with classmates I didn’t really know before the retreat, but I was also able to appreciate the stories my teachers had to tell. This retreat is a great example that everyone’s story is different but God still shines through. This experience gave me a great chance to journal and let words and stories fuel my faith. I highly encourage anyone and everyone to jump at the chance to learn more about yourself and about God."
Through this shared experience, seniors were invited to pause, pray, and deepen their awareness of God’s presence as they continue their formation at Loyola and prepare for the next chapter of their lives.
