More than 100 Loyola Academy students demonstrated exceptional skill, confidence, and professionalism at the Illinois DECA North Suburban Area Competition held on Wednesday, January 14, in Rosemont, Illinois. In total, 102 students earned an impressive 76 awards, a testament to both their preparation and their ability to think critically and perform under pressure.
DECA is an internationally recognized, cocurricular organization that prepares emerging leaders and entrepreneurs for careers in business, marketing, finance, hospitality, and management. Through competitive events, DECA challenges students to apply classroom learning to real-world business scenarios, strengthening skills in problem-solving, communication, teamwork, ethical decision-making, and professional presentation.
At the area level, each Loyola competitor or team of two participated in a single event of one business function: finance, marketing, hospitality, entrepreneurship, entertainment, etc. Each of the 27 events was divided into several sections of competitors, and consisted of three components: a written exam assessing foundational business knowledge, and two role-play scenarios in which students responded to realistic business situations in front of judges, simulating the decision-making and communication required in professional environments.
A standout performance came from Scarlett Byrnes '28, who was the only competitor to place first in her section in all three components, earning first place overall in her section.
