YPB Teaches Ramblers the Ins and Outs of Philanthropy
In April, sixteen Ramblers presented capstone projects at the Youth Philanthropy Board (YPB) 3rd annual Grant Awards Ceremony & Commencement.
The YPB is a part of the Three Pillars Initiative and has students from Loyola Academy, North Shore Country Day School, Regina Dominican High School, New Trier High School, Evanston Township High School, and Roycemore School.
The YPB's goals are to educate teens about the fundamentals of philanthropic leadership in the community, empower young people as decision-makers in the process of allocating funds to local charitable organizations and implementing fundraising projects, and instill in these future philanthropists a life-long interest in philanthropic leadership and charitable involvement in the community.
During year one, juniors learn about the process of grant-making before they take the lead and design criteria for organizations seeking funding, send out Requests for Proposals (RFP) to local nonprofits, evaluate those funding requests, conduct site visits, and ultimately decide how to distribute $10,000 to the nonprofits that best meet the criteria.
In their second year, seniors revisit the organizations they funded in their first year. They also spend this second year learning about the art and science of the other side of philanthropy: fundraising. Seniors craft cases for support and explore solicitation and promotional strategies to raise money that replenishes and grows the Youth Philanthropy Board Endowment Fund.
