President’s Leadership Council Volunteers with Catholic Charities
In late February and early March, the Faith & Service Committee of Loyola Academy’s President’s Leadership Council (PLC) hosted two nights of service in partnership with Catholic Charities in Chicago.
On Tuesday, February 27, and Tuesday, March 6, alumni volunteers served meals to approximately 130 guests, and diners were offered a snack bag to take as they left the center. Loyola alumni also prepared more than fifty bag lunches, since the number of hungry exceeds the space at Catholic Charities.
The meals were donated by Sierra Tavern, an Italian Restaurant near River North, for the February event and by the American Restaurant Tavern at the Park for the March event.
Tom McBreen ’92 volunteered with his wife and three young daughters, all future Ramblers, on March 6. It was important to McBreen that his children understand that some people do not have a home or money for a meal. “I brought my family down to learn and understand that there are people who aren’t as fortunate as we are,” he says. “There are people who have a very different life. A life where they don’t have a home. They don’t have money to buy a meal. I wanted my kids to know it’s important to give back and to help those in need. Volunteering makes you feel good. We could take a few hours out of our busy lives to serve coffee, tea and dinner to 130 homeless people. We helped them smile and not have to worry about things for a few hours that night. My kids now have a deeper respect for others. And to treat them the way they would like to be treated.”
“It was a great evening that enabled Loyola alumni to interact with those affected by homelessness in Chicago,” reflects Assistant Director of Alumni Relations Ashley Sanks ’10. “It’s wonderful to see the Jesuit values of service and compassion continue to inspire our alumni.”
“The Tuesday Night Supper program was a great opportunity for members of the Rambler community to come together and support the initiatives of Catholic Charities,” says Laura Schramm ’07, PLC executive board member. “Catholic Charities gave us specific tasks, and the Loyola volunteers delivered with smiles and enthusiasm. We look forward to participating in future Tuesday Night Suppers.”
