On Monday, December 4, Loyola Academy’s President Leadership Council (PLC) partnered with Catholic Charities to host its annual “Celebration of Giving” at the Merchandise Mart in downtown Chicago.
"Now in its 70th year, the Celebration of Giving provides toys to 25,000 children and their families served by Catholic Charities," explains Marie Jochum '00, Loyola Academy alumna and coordinator of the Catholic Charities Merchandise Mart. “Volunteers and donors bring Christmas magic to children who otherwise wouldn’t have gifts."
Volunteers packed bags of Christmas gifts for those who are unable to afford them, making sure that each family had a gift from their wish list. If the wish list item did not match up with the gift, volunteers would sort through the donated gifts and find one that did match the families wish.
"It was great to see so many Loyola alumni from classes in the 1970s to the 2010s working side by side to give back during the holiday season,” says Alumni Relations CoordinatorAshley K. E. Sanks ’10. “The values of faith, service and generosity instilled in us during our four years at Loyola continue to resonate in our lives, and this was a great example of Ramblers serving as women and men for others."
The mission of the PLC is to participate in opportunities that uphold Loyola Academy’s values and demonstrate faith and professional development. This is the first year the PLC and Catholic Charities worked together to host this event, being a huge success by exceeding expectations with 35 Rambler alumni volunteers!
A special thank you to President Leadership Council faith and service executive board member Laura Schramm ’07 and Marie Jochum ’00 from Catholic Charities for coming together to plan this event.
