Mentor Program Kicks Off a New Year

On Thursday, November 30, current students, parents and alumni enjoyed dinner in Loyola’s student center to kick off Loyola Academy’s 2017–18 Student-Alumni Mentor Program. The program pairs young alumni mentors with current Loyola students to create a space for networking and mentorship within the Loyola family. Next is the program's annual dinner hosted by Ryan M. O'Donnell '95 at his Lincoln Park hot spot, Gemini.
After alumni introduced themselves and shared postgrad stories, including their paths to success and present endeavors, they spoke in small groups with students about everything from their time at Loyola to college admissions, selecting a college major and more. To be sure, guidance and encouragement are hallmarks of the program, which is now in its eighth year.

Tessa Volpe ’18 finds it useful when the alumni mentor and student mentee bond at the outings, especially when alumni share stories about their time at Loyola. “The mentor program at Loyola is not only fun but also incredibly useful,” she says. “Through this program, I have met a wide range of Loyola alumni who have introduced me to professional fields I had never seen myself in.”

Loyola Academy Alumni Relations Coordinator Ashley K. Sanks ’10 was pleased with the large turnout of roughly 130alumni, students and parents. “Witnessing alumni volunteer their time to get to know current students and guide them on future college and career decisions makes me proud to be a part of the Loyola Academy community,” she says. “There is a special bond and genuine interest Ramblers have for one another.”

"These students are so impressive—and busy!” observes Bridget Bredemann ’08 “It is a priority for me to find ways to be helpful without taking away from schoolwork and family time.”

As part of Loyola Academy's Leadership Development program, alumni mentors and current students will attend special events together each year including dinner in the city, a special alumni shadow day and more. Each mentor group is dedicated to helping current students navigate through challenges at Loyola Academy, prepare for the college application and transition processes and also network for their careers and areas of interest.
