Loyola Academy Students Explore Faith, Literature, and History on Spring Break Trip to England

During spring break, 30 Loyola Academy students embarked on an immersive educational journey across England, experiencing firsthand the rich intersections of history, literature, and faith that continue to shape the world. As students engage in four years of literature study at Loyola, the trip offered a meaningful opportunity to encounter texts, authors, and historical contexts in a lived and tangible way.
Accompanied by faculty and staff chaperones Tim Kane ‘86, Katie Klein, and Stacey Zupec, students traveled from Chicago to London before beginning a thoughtfully curated itinerary that integrated cultural exploration with academic enrichment and spiritual reflection.

The journey began with a visit to Canterbury, where students toured the historic cathedral and explored its significance as a center of pilgrimage, setting the tone for the rest of the trip as they began their own journey of exploration. In London, students experienced some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, including the Globe Theatre, the Tower of London, Westminster Abbey, and the British Museum, while also attending professional theatre performances in the West End.

Mass was celebrated on Easter Sunday at Our Lady of Mount Carmel and Saint Simon Stock in Kensington, offering students the opportunity to gather in prayer while abroad.

Beyond London, the group traveled to Cambridge, York, Haworth, the Yorkshire Coast, and the Lake District, where classroom learning came to life through literary and historical exploration. In Haworth, home of the Brontë sisters, students explored the village and surrounding moors that inspired Wuthering Heights, with many eager to bring a copy of the novel home. In York, students experienced the city’s historic charm and participated in a lively and memorable ghost tour. From coastal landscapes to the natural beauty that shaped the Romantic poets, students encountered the enduring influence of literature in new and meaningful ways. The journey concluded in Stratford-upon-Avon with a visit to the birthplace of William Shakespeare.

Throughout the trip, students were invited to engage deeply with new ideas, one another, and the broader world. Rooted in Loyola’s commitment to forming the whole person, the experience fostered intellectual curiosity, cultural awareness, and spiritual growth, encouraging students to see learning not simply as an academic pursuit, but as a lifelong journey of discovery and reflection.

This spring break experience reflects Loyola Academy’s ongoing commitment to forming students who are attentive to the world around them, open to new perspectives, and prepared to engage thoughtfully with both tradition and change.
