On Sunday, April 15, nearly 200 Loyola Academy parents and students gathered for the annual Family Mass and Day of Service, sponsored by the Mothers’ Club and Fathers’ Network. Loyola President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, presided over Mass.
In his homily, Fr. McGrath encouraged us to step away from social media and devote time to serving others. Mary Zein, from Well of Mercy, introduced a young mother and her daughter who had benefited greatly from that organization, and Adriana Kelly thanked Loyola Academy on behalf of Catholic Charities.
Families then worked side-by-side to pack, load and deliver items such as canned vegetables, pasta, rice and coffee to designated Arrupe charities. In addition to the packaged food donated by participants, students separately raised approximately $11,000 in donations through their classes and purchased needed items for each of the charities.
Through Family Mass and Day of Service, Loyola parents and students are living Loyola Academy’s mission to “respond to our God-given call to become women and men for others.”
We are grateful to our dedicated event chairs: Ellen and Bob Largay and Martha and Bill Forsyth. Special thanks to Bill Brandstrader ’88 of the Fathers’ Network, Special Events Coordinator Joan Schniedwind and Director of Special Events Sophie Streeter.
