Chicago Architect Norvetta Landon Visits Honors Architecture 2 Class
Chicago-based architect with expertise in co-housing and mother of Rambler Nikko Landon ’19, Norvetta Landon visited the Honors Architecture 2 class this past month. Ms. Landon led a critique of the advanced architecture students’ final Co-Housing and Housing for the Homeless Scale Models.
Ms. Landon works with Indelible Impressions Construction, which specializes in the rebuilding of communities through innovative construction. She emphasized to students the importance of knowing the demographic and economic conditions of the families that students wished to serve.
Students thoroughly enjoyed the sharp professionalism and the deep sensitivity Ms. Landon shared with them. Examining one model she exclaimed, “We can bring this house on line right now!”
Before Ms. Landon’s visit, each student was given an entire academic quarter to design working conceptual as well as presentation scale models of a housing unit that could comfortably accommodate multiple families or to design an economically feasible small-scale lodging for a homeless person. The students studied nationally respected examples of such housing and worked within the limitations of one or more families requiring carefully studied and dedicated work and living arrangements.
This assignment aligned with Loyola’s first ever all-school reading of Just Mercy: A Story of Justice and Redemption. Written by lawyer and social justice activist Bryan Stevenson, the book addresses important issues of race, gender, mental health, social justice equality and education.
At the conclusion of her visit, Ms. Landon suggested the beginning of a working relationship between Indelible Impressions Construction and the Loyola Academy Architecture Program. Needless to say, students were ecstatic at the thought!
