In January, eight hockey teams from Jesuit and Catholic high schools across the nation accepted an invitation from Loyola Academy’s varsity hockey program, Loyola Gold, and St. Ignatius College Prep to participate in the second annual Jesuit Cup Hockey Tournament.
Games were played at MB Ice Arena, Johnny's West and Heartland Ice Arena, and the following schools participated: co-host Loyola Academy (Illinois), co-host St. Ignatius College Prep (Illinois), Brophy College Prep (Arizona), Gonzaga College High School (Washington, DC), St. Joseph’s Preparatory School (Pennsylvania), Marquette University High School (Wisconsin), Regis Jesuit (Colorado) and St. Rita (Illinois).
While the teams battled on the ice, players had ample time to get to know each other off the ice at a special Mass and breakfast hosted by St. Ignatius for the teams.
“That was the best part,” says senior Jack Purcell. “Getting to know the guys off the ice is a cool experience. It was awesome to get Jesuit schools together and bond over the game of hockey.”
The tournament started on Saturday, January 13, and each school played three games over the course of the weekend. Loyola Academy and St. Joseph’s faced off in the championship game, and St. Joseph’s captured first place.
“I love this tournament, because it's an opportunity for the teams to meet players from other Jesuit schools while playing competitive hockey,” says Loyola Academy Hockey Moderator Ms. Melissa Krein.
