AIAS Loyola Academy Visits the Society of Architectural Historians

On the evening of Wednesday, December 6, officers of Loyola Academy’s chapter of the American Institute of Architecture Students (AIAS) visited the Cliff Dwellers Club high atop 200 S. Michigan Avenue to take part in the annual Christmas Show and Tell event sponsored by the Society of Architectural Historians. The event is a yearly accounting of the work of the members of the Society for the year just ending.
Ms. Pauline Salinga, executive director of the society, welcomed the nine-person Loyola Academy team which was tasked with presenting the results of its two and a half year-long effort to advise on the renovation of the ancient church of San Pablo in the Philippines through concept drawings, scale models and architectural elevations. This concept was to include a new Museum of the Cagayan Valley which would occupy space in the center of the giant nave.

The San Pablo Church was considered pivotal to the spiritual development of the entire Cagayan Valley, and its great size was testament to the pride that both the Spanish clerics and the Filipino workers felt in the evangelization efforts.

Co-presidents Veronica Fischer ’18 and Anthony Michi ’18 along with Vice President Kathryn Ulowetz ’18 represented the Loyola Academy chapter in giving a presentation on the work of the altar retablo committee and the 3D modelling/AutoCAD committee detailing the large scale effort with its successes, its trials and its tribulations.

The members of the Society were then invited to a close viewing of the models and drawings which were on display in the banquet room.

Along with the co-presidents and vice president, officers Sebastian Rodriguez ’19, Andrew Langrill ’19, Riley Scanlon ’19, Patrick Voight ’20, Drake Johnson ’18 and Hannah Sim ’18 were in attendance and able to meet and greet the members of the Society.

Mr. Bill Locke saw to the hospitality of all the visiting members with the three course meal prior to the nine presentations.

Mr. Jim Cleland is the faculty moderator of the Loyola Academy AIAS chapter.
