At this fall’s homecoming game on Saturday, September 23, Rambler fans, past and present, gathered to honor former Loyola coach Bob Spoo, one of the Chicago Catholic League’s greatest football coaches.
The day began with a spirited tailgate outside Sachs Stadium where alumni, parents, friends and formers players gathered before kickoff against Fenwick at 1:30 p.m.
“Coach Spoo was always a gentleman of the first order,” says James O’Brien ’74, who played for Spoo in the 1970s. “He was intense and precise, a perfectionist with a vision and clear plan for victory. Preparation, practice and execution were the hallmarks of his coaching.”
Between the first and second quarters, Spoo was recognized on Hoerster Field and met with much applause by the energized Homecoming crowd. To cap off a great day, the Ramblers claimed a victory, defeating the Fenwick Friars 41–14.
