Go Forth and Serve

The Loyola Academy community celebrated its Sending Forth Mass on Tuesday, May 16. The Mass is an annual celebration of the school year, a recognition of the outstanding efforts of distinguished students and faculty and a send off for the senior class.
After the celebration of the Eucharist, Assistant Principal for Student Services Mr. Charles Heintz presented a number of awards to students and faculty members.

Real Rambler Award
The Real Rambler Award acknowledges four students—one from each grade level—and an adult who have chosen to live their lives as women and men for others. These individuals are people who exude strong character and discipline, who desire to exemplify the ideals of RIPLOC: to be religious, intellectually competent, physically fit, loving, open to growth and committed to doing justice.

The four students who have cultivated this Rambler culture and who stand as Real Rambler role models are:

Freshman Nicole Vagra
Sophomore Claudia Pensiamento
Junior Jacob Jalloway
Senior Madison Kane

The adult Real Rambler who has made an impact on our school community and culture is Assistant Dean of Students Mr. Beau Desherow ’93. “He embodies Loyola’s ideal of being open to growth,” Heintz said of Desherow. “He has excelled in a variety of roles and never stops trying to be better.”

The Michael Rebarchak Memorial Award
The Rebarchak Award is presented annually to a senior student who has modeled service to our school community. This award honors the memory of Michael Rebarchak, an outstanding member of the Class of 1979, and it recognizes the substantive yet unheralded contribution made to Loyola by a senior student who quietly makes things happen through his or her involvement in and around the school. The 2017 Rebarchak Award winner is Hannah Swanson.

“Over the past four years, Hannah has been dedicated to multiple pursuits—academics, the arts, athletics and Campus Ministry,” Heintz said of Swanson as he introduced her award. “In each arena, adults and peers have acknowledged and recognized leadership and humility in this recipient.” Heintz continued, quoting one of Swanson’s coaches, “Her work ethic and her enthusiasm make her a role model for the younger girls. She’s a quiet leader, but when she speaks, everyone listens.”

The Fausone Medal
The Dumbach Scholars Honors Program annually presents the Fausone Medal, which recognizes one of our most inspirational students, Molly Fausone, a member of the Class of 2008. Despite a traumatic accident before her sophomore year, Molly excelled in the classroom, on sports teams, and as a key contributor to the Dumbach Scholars. The Fausone Medal winner is awarded to a member of our community who inspires us. This year’s winner represents the ideals of this award by his resilience, his commitment to Loyola and his care for all Ramblers. The 2017 Fausone Medal recipient is O’Shaughnessy Resource teacher and Boys’ Head Tennis Coach Mr. Tom Fitzgerald.

“Thank you for inspiring so many Ramblers and giving them the confidence to succeed,” said Loyola Academy Principal Dr. Kathryn Baal as she presented the award to Fitzgerald. “You have stood humbly as a man of character, you have challenged students and adults, you have modeled patience and love and you have lived your life like Christ the Teacher. We are indebted to you for your 41 years of service to our school, and we thank you for choosing to be a Rambler.”
