On September 8, players from all levels of the girls' volleyball program participated in a day of service at Marville Academy in Des Plaines.
Students received a tour of the school and an overview of the social services provided at Marywille. "I learned how a community and a safe environment have a huge impact on a person's life," says Emma Stevens '17.
One group worked in a garden on the grounds of the Jen School, a therapeutic and vocational school for boys. Another group worked to tidy classrooms and decorate an event space in preparation for Jammin' with Jen, a farm-to-table fundraising dinner that showcases the garden and unique resources of the school.
"This day of service was meaningful because we were able to spend valuable time as a program together, and helping others is the perfect way to bond," reflects Laurren Henning '18. "Loyola does an incredible job engaging its students with service opportunities, and I'm so glad we were able to serve our community as one unit."
Mr. Mark Chang of the Theology Department serves as the head coach of the girls' varsity volleyball team. He was emphatic when explaining the purpose and importance of the service day to his players. "No matter what we do in life, we must always carve out time to meet the needs of others," Chang wrote in an email to his volleyball players. "This is what we call a faith that does justice." Adding, "It's great when we can come together to win volleyball maches, but it's even greater to come together to lend a helping hand."
