Alumnus Martin Hunter '12 Partners with LA Faculty to Bring Graduation Readiness Program to Bowman First-Gen Leaders
Loyola Academy is equipping students with essential life skills through a new graduation-readiness program focused on financial education, developed in partnership with alumnus Martin Hunter '12. Designed for Bowman First-Gen Leaders, the eight-week pilot course is already making a meaningful impact on nearly 50 sophomore through senior students.
Created by Hunter and co-founder and co-facilitator Nate Ruben through their company invstn.me, the program focuses on practical, real-world financial education students can apply immediately. Meeting weekly after school, sessions explore topics such as budgeting, credit, saving and investing, paying for college, and building financial independence.
"This program is designed to meet Ramblers where they are in terms of their financial education and prepares students to graduate with real financial independence," said Martin. "The content focuses on building practical skills students will use immediately, and for the rest of their lives."
The program reflects a thoughtful collaboration between Hunter and Loyola Academy faculty. The curriculum is intentionally hands-on and reflective. Each 45-minute session blends direct instruction with opportunities for students to connect lessons to their own goals and experiences. The opening session introduces a central theme: money as a tool—one that can help students build the lives they aspire to lead. From there, students build life skills and financial education—learning to differentiate between checking and savings accounts, understanding the basics of credit and borrowing, and how it relates to affording college, and developing a personalized post-graduation readiness plan focused on financial independence and long-term wealth building.
"Early feedback has been encouraging," said Bowman First-Gen Coordinator Robert Metellus. "Students are actively engaged—asking insightful questions and making connections between course concepts and their own lives, particularly as they prepare to navigate the financial realities of college and beyond."
By pairing alumni expertise with Loyola's mission-driven approach to education, the program is helping Bowman First-Gen Leaders build not only financial knowledge but the confidence to use it wisely.
