Dumbach Scholars Lead with Curiosity and Service on Field Trip to Art Institute of Chicago
On Friday, April 17, Loyola Academy's Dumbach Scholars partnered with St. Benedict the African School for a meaningful and engaging field trip to the Art Institute of Chicago. Twelve students from the Dumbach Scholars program, accompanied by chaperones Lesley Shifrin, Dumbach Director and AP Art History teacher, and Kati Byrne, Campus Minister, spent the day in shared learning and connection with 45 seventh- and eighth-grade students. The visit began with lunch together, where students quickly formed connections, before Loyola students stepped into the role of docents, guiding small groups through the museum's galleries.
In the weeks leading up to the visit, students in Dumbach Scholars—each a former AP Art History student—collaborated to design four mini-tours tailored for junior high learners. These tours explored key artistic movements and collections, including Impressionism, Post-Impressionism, Asian Art, American Art, and Modern Art. With thoughtful preparation and enthusiasm, Loyola students brought the works to life, fostering both understanding and curiosity among their younger peers.
The experience proved transformative for all involved. "The Art Institute Docent trip was probably my favorite field trip I’ve ever taken at Loyola," shared Juan Carlos Chiwah '27. For Ben Olsen '26, the day affirmed a deeper vocational calling: "Friday was such a wonderful time. All of the middle schoolers and teachers were so kind. My favorite moment was that I got to show them the older painting under Picasso’s Old Man with Guitar, which is something my mom told me she showed her students on field trips. I feel so good about going into teaching." As students said their goodbyes, many expressed hope that the partnership will continue. "It was honestly one of the best experiences we’ve had," said Lesley Shifrin. "This trip reflected the core values of Dumbach Scholars—engagement with the arts, connection to the city of Chicago, and a commitment to leadership and service. Our students brought that mission to life, guiding younger students with insight and enthusiasm while forming meaningful connections that made the day unforgettable."
