Loyola Academy Choirs Earn Gold at National Festival in Nashville
Loyola Academy's Honors Chorale and Honors Chamber Singers traveled to Nashville, Tennessee, on April 28 and April 29 to participate in the prestigious WorldStrides Choir Festival, where both ensembles delivered outstanding performances among a competitive national field.
Competing against choirs from seven states, both groups earned Gold ratings, each achieving average scores above 90. In addition to this distinction, both ensembles recorded the second-highest scores in their respective divisions, underscoring the strength, discipline, and artistry of Loyola’s choral program. The festival was hosted at Nashville’s historic First Baptist Church, providing a fitting setting for a weekend of sacred and concert repertoire.
The Honors Chamber Singers performed a diverse and technically demanding program, including Psalm 150 by Brazilian composer Ernani Aguiar, Die Nachtigall by Felix Mendelssohn, and Death Came A-Knockin’ by Ruthie Foster. Honors Chorale presented Cantate Domino by Heinrich Schütz, After the Rain by Sarah Quartel, and the spiritual Nothin’ Gonna Stumble My Feet by Greg Gilpin.
A highlight of the weekend came when Valentina Sandoval '27 was recognized with a Maestro Award for her solo performance in Death Came A-Knockin’. Selected from among hundreds of student vocalists, this honor is awarded at the discretion of festival judges to one performer who demonstrates exceptional musicality and presence.
Beyond the competition, students experienced the rich musical heritage of Nashville. The choirs attended a performance at the Grand Ole Opry, visited the Country Music Hall of Fame, toured the Ryman Auditorium, and enjoyed time together through activities such as line dancing. Rooted in Loyola’s Jesuit mission, the group also celebrated Mass at St. Mary of the Seven Sorrows Church, offering a moment of reflection and gratitude amid a weekend of achievement.
The Loyola Academy community is invited to celebrate the choirs’ accomplishments at their Spring Concert on Tuesday, April 28, at 7:00 p.m. in the McGrath Family Performing Arts Center. The concert is free and open to all.
