Clavius, Dumbach, and STEAM Scholars Induction Mass
On the morning of Sunday, September 22, we welcomed the newest members of Dumbach, Clavius, and STEAM Scholars at the annual Induction Mass in the Loyola Academy Chapel.
Science Teacher Ms. Michels, director of Clavius scholars, welcomed all the inductees to the celebratory Mass. Student leaders, Meredith Duryea '25 (Dumbach), Jack Ehlert '25 (Clavius), and Rebecca Virgen '25 (STEAM) all spoke of their experiences in their respective programs.
"Right now, as you sit in this room, about to be inducted into Dumbach, Clavius, or STEAM Scholars, you may know a couple of people. However, there are probably a lot of unfamiliar faces. I think one of the best parts about Dumbach, as well as Clavius and STEAM, I'm sure, is that by the time you're my age and getting ready to leave Loyola, none of these faces will be unfamiliar. Through classes, small groups, field trips, and other activities, every single person in your program will become a friend. I joined Dumbach with just that one friend who encouraged me to sign up, and now I have a whole community of classmates that I look forward to interacting with every day." — Meredith Duryea '25
"Clavius Scholars are asked to go beyond academic excellence in the classroom. It is the goal of our program to not only develop your aptitude for math and science; but more importantly, to develop your interest and passion in these subjects. For many of you, interest in an academic subject may begin in the classroom, but, as Clavius Scholars, we encourage you to take your interests a step further. As active members of this community, you will have the opportunity to share your interests with others in group discussions, and it is through these discussions that you may develop new interests." — Jack Ehlert '25
"I look forward to the new challenges that will present themselves to the STEAM Scholars, and know you will have many of your own challenges in the upcoming years. These experiences helped me grow and envision a future in science for myself. As a senior, I look forward to serving the outside community as a STEAM Scholar." — Rebecca Virgen '25
Loyola Academy Campus Minister Rev. Stanislaw Czarnecki, SJ, and Rev. Arkadiusz Ciemiega, SJ, presided over Mass. Campus Minister Mr. Mike Gregg, Danny Blanchard '25, and Jack Ehlert provided beautiful musical accompaniment. Kennedy Currence '25, Caroline Locke '25, Lael O'Shaughnessy '25, and Lucas Yordan '25also helped during the Mass.
The Beavers Coffee + Donuts food truck stopped at Loyola so families could celebrate with coffee and delicious donuts after Mass.
