Loyola Academy Bands Perform Side-by-Side Concert with Northshore Concert Band
On Wednesday, November 15, Loyola Academy Bands performed their annual side-by-side concert with Northshore Concert Band (NCB) in the Leemputte Family Theater. The performance was an excellent opportunity for Loyola students to perform alongside professional musicians, celebrating a unique partnership and providing a rich musical experience for our students and the community alike. The evening was a wonderful showcase of talent, passion, and artistic collaboration—the second in a series of annual concerts as part of an enriching partnership between LA and NCB.
Established in 1956, the 100 member Northshore Concert Band has gained international recognition for its musical excellence, leadership in community music, and commitment to music education. The evening's performance was conducted by NCB's Artistic Director and Director of Bands at Northwestern University Dr. Mallory Thompson.
The concert was rounded out with performances by Loyola's Bands and selections from NCB's fall series concert:
Gustav Holst The Planets, Op. 32 Mars, the Bringer of War (Transcribed by Merlin Patterson) Jupiter, the Bringer of Jollity (Transcribed by Clark McAlister, edited by Alfred Reed)
Richard Strauss Allerseelen (All Souls' Day) (Transcribed by Albert Oliver Davis, Edited by Frederick Fennell)
Joe Hisaishi Howl's Moving Castle (Arranged by Yo Goto) The Allure of Dawn — Wandering Sophie — The Courageous Cavalry — The Boy Who Swallowed the Star — The Merry-Go-Round of Life
Sergei Prokofiev March, Op. 99 (Arranged by James Meredith)
Karl King Barnum and Bailey's Favorite (Edited by Loras John Schissel)
Erika Svanoe Barnum and Tesla's Tandem Bicycle
In addition to side-by-side concerts, which occur annually each fall, other highlights of the new partnership between LA and NCB include unique education opportunities for Loyola students like weekly open NCB rehearsals, participation in NCB's annual Festival of Music, and music coaching with NCB musicians, including Dr. Mallory Thompson, NCB's artistic director.
