Loyola's Certamen Teams Shine at First 2023-24 IHSA Competition
Loyola's Certamen teams competed in this year's first IHSA Latin competition for high schools in Illinois' Northern Region at North Side College Prep on Tuesday evening, November 7, and acquitted themselves well at all three levels.
The Novice (first-year) team, including freshmen Connor Clark '27, Blake Soeding '27, Maxim Suschko '27, and Chris York '27, took fourth place at their level. The Lower Level (second-year) team, made up of freshman Juan Carlos Chiwah '27 and sophomores Will Doonan '26, Jackson Humphrey '26, and Ben Olsen '26, took second place, finishing narrowly behind North Side College Prep, the eventual division winner. And the Upper Level (third- and fourth-year) team, including Elle Anderson '25, Keira Gergits '25, Leah Harker '24, and Margaret McGovern '24, finished in fourth place in their bracket.
The next competition will be held in early December at New Trier West, while the third competition will take place in February at Loyola. The overall winner of the three competitions at each level will advance to the State Certamen tournament and—potentially—to the National contest.
