Students at Loyola Academy Win National Spanish Examination Scholarships

Recent graduate Rachel Barrientos '23 and current senior Ryan Kunitzer '24 won the 2023 Senior Scholarship and the 2023 Junior Immersion Travel Scholarship, respectively, for their achievement on the National Spanish Examination and for their excellent skills in the Spanish language.
These national awards, valued at $1,000 for college and $2,000 for travel, are given each year to students from across the United States who become eligible by earning high scores on the National Spanish Examination and then submitting samples of their written and oral work in Spanish to a selection committee appointed by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese.

In July, Ryan traveled with 11 additional winners to experience first-hand Costa Rican culture, engage in volunteer work, and hone his Spanish language skills. The scholarship covers the cost of the entire trip for a six-day Spanish immersion program.

Beginning this September, Rachel is now attending Boston University. She is studying in the combined program of Linguistics and Computer Science with a minor in Latin American Studies.

Loyola Academy has a long history of excellence in academics and has participated in the National Spanish Examination for the last 18 years.  Congratulations to students Rachel Barrientos and Ryan Kunitzer and their nominating Spanish teacher, Erica Nathan-Gamauf, who should be very proud of their accomplishments.
