Students and Staff Recognized by the National Center for Women & Information Technology

The National Center for Women & Information Technology (NCWIT) announced that Coordinator of Educational Technology Jan Stoner is a 2023 Aspirations in Computing Educator Award winner. In addition, six members from Loyola’s Women in STEAM Club also won an NCWIT student award. Congratulations to Savannah Sochacki ’24 (Affiliate Honorable Mention), Elizabeth O’Hara ’24 (Affiliate Honorable Mention), Melanie Clark ’24 (Affiliate Rising Star), Zoe Haralampopoulos ’26 (Affiliate Rising Star), Stavroula Konstantopoulos ’24 (Affiliate Honorable Mention), and Adeline Needham ’24 (Affiliate Winner).
The Educator Award recognizes teachers for their efforts to promote gender equity in computing. Since 2011, more than 500 educators have been recognized and have received more than $225,000 in professional development funding.

The Student Award honors 9th-12th grade female students for their computing-related achievements and interests and encourages them to pursue their passions. Award recipients are selected based on their aptitude and aspirations in technology and computing, as demonstrated by their computing experience, computing-related activities, leadership experience, tenacity in the face of barriers to technology access, and plans for post-secondary education.

This year, there were over 3,500 high school applications and more than 140 educator applications from all 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico, U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, overseas U.S. military bases, and Canada.

The ceremony for the 2023 NCWIT AiC Affiliate Awards was held on Thursday, April 13. Each recipient received an individual trophy and/or certificate and swag prizes.
