The sold-out 2023 Jesuit Cup basketball games were held on Friday, January 13, in Loyola Academy’s East Gym. The matches, played annually against St. Ignatius College Prep, drew huge crowds of fans from each Jesuit school. The boys’ basketball team recaptured the cup after defeating the Wolfpack 46-41. The girls’ basketball team lost 50-42 after a well-played game.
Junior Juliet Dempsey sang the National Anthem before each game. During halftime of the girls’ matchup, the audience was dazzled with performances by Cheerleading and the Ramblerettes. During halftime of the boys’ game, performances by the Cheer Squad and Ramberettes were followed by a spirited game of musical chairs between Loyola and St. Ignatius students.
In the weeks leading up to the Jesuit Cup, the Loyola Academy and St. Ignatius communities engaged in some friendly competition off the court by hosting a food drive to help those in need this winter. The Ramblers collected 2,980 food items, winning the challenge and earning a special dress down day on Tuesday, January 17. Together, both schools collected a total of 3,773 cans of food which will be donated to the Evanston Food Pantry and the Northfield Food Pantry.
On the day of the big games, a rousing Rambler pep rally took place at the end of the school day and featured the talents of the Ramblerettes, Loyola Cheer, LA Step Team, and Pep Band. Seniors Lexi Vasilopolous, Will Farrell, and Kyan Gibbs served as emcees. Throughout the assembly, energy was high as music blared from inside the gym and students, sitting in bleachers and on the balcony, cheered on their friends and classmates. A crowd favorite was a table relay race between juniors and seniors and Tik Tok dance competitions between winter sports teams. Notably, the entire school community was able to celebrate the football team, which took home the IHSA 8A State Championship in the fall. Our winter sports teams, represented by captains, senior members, or those nominated by their coaches, were also honored: boys’ basketball, girls’ basketball, girls’ bowling, cheerleading, boys’ hockey, girls’ hockey, Ramblerettes, swimming & diving, and wrestling.
