Academic Jumpstart Program Preps Freshmen for Success

Loyola Academy welcomed 125 incoming freshmen on Wednesday, August 17, to Academic Jumpstart. This free, two-hour tune-up session focused on setting students up for success as they begin their high school journeys and was offered to all members of the Class of 2026.
Presenters included Dr. Tina Mesltrom (Languages), Mr. Mark McGuire '06 (Social Studies), and Mrs. Molly Harris (Literacy Specialist). Topics ranged from how to navigate Loyola's learning management system "OnCampus" to tips on time management, limiting distractions, strategies for annotating and processing information and more.

In 2021 during its inaugural year, the Academic Jumpstart program introduced a sister program, the Academic Drop-In Center, where peer tutors and others are available to assist their fellow Ramblers.

Loyola's Drop-In Center saw great successes in its first year with 951 Ramblers utilizing the center 4,537 times! An extensive review of research and literature regarding the use of peer tutors in secondary education found the benefits include higher class and final exam grades, improved attendance and improved long-term retention of material learned. Tutoring improves both the tutor's and the student’s skills as it requires attention, motivation, and review of existing knowledge and skills.
