Loyola Marks the End of the School Year at the Sending Forth Mass

The Loyola Academy community celebrated its Sending Forth Mass on Friday, May 13. The Mass is an annual celebration of the school year, a recognition of the outstanding efforts of distinguished students and faculty and a sendoff for the senior class. In his homily, Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ, reminded students of our many blessings and prayed in thanksgiving for the leadership of the Class of 2022. “Take a minute today to pause and listen,” he said. “Feel the gratitude stir and open your heart to service.”

A beautiful rendition of “Ad Maiorem Dei Gloriam'' by Matthew Ferraro preceded the celebration of the Eucharist. Next, Loyola Academy Principal Charlie Heintz presented a number of special awards.

—The Michael Rebarchak Memorial Award—
The Rebarchak Award is presented annually to a senior student who has modeled service to our school community. This award honors the memory of Michael Rebarchak, an outstanding member of the Class of 1979, and it recognizes the substantive yet unheralded contribution made to Loyola by a senior student who quietly makes things happen through his or her involvement in and around the school. The 2022 Rebarchak Award winner is Meghan Oeste.

“Meghan is genuine, perceptive, caring, and has developed into a highly responsible leader,” Heintz said of Oeste. “She has a willingness to put herself into new and, at times, challenging situations. She carries herself with a sense of self-assuredness that belies her age. She has impacted Loyola significantly, many times from literally behind the scenes. She quickly wins the respect of her peers and teachers. One adult remarks, ‘She is someone to count on. Her effort comes with no expectation of recognition; she never settles for good enough; she continues to ask, What else? and What more?’

—The Fausone Medal—
The Dumbach Scholars Honors Program annually presents the Fausone Medal, which recognizes one of our most inspirational students, Molly Fausone, a member of the Class of 2008. Despite a traumatic accident before her sophomore year, Molly excelled in the classroom, on sports teams, and as a key contributor to the Dumbach Scholars. The Fausone Medal winner is awarded to a member of our community who inspires us. Prior Fausone Medalists have inspired with their perseverance, their activism and their heroism. This year’s winners represent the ideals of this award by demonstrating how to put love into action for our community during a difficult time. The 2022 Fausone Medal recipients are Lauren Dziedzic and Liam Zidar.

“Lauren and Liam have worked to promote the growing need for mental health support, as well as minimizing the stigma around receiving therapeutic help,” Heintz said. “Our recipients have helped their peers recognize the signs and be brave enough to ask for help. Most importantly, they have reminded others that they are not alone in their struggles. In the words of a Hope Squad moderator, ‘They have shown unwavering leadership over three years.’”

—The Ignatian Medal—
Loyola reserves the Ignatian Medal for special moments. This award focuses the attention of the community on an exceptional individual who has lived a life of service and generosity. Ms. Nancy Paridy, chair of the Board of Trustees, presented the Ignatian Medal to Loyola Academy President Rev. Patrick E. McGrath, SJ. “Our school community has benefited greatly from his leadership over the past thirteen years,” Paridy said. “Fr. McGrath has used his God-given gifts and talents in a spirit of gratitude and generosity. He has embodied the Ignatian ideal. As he reminds us often, our goal in life is to give ourselves away in service of others. Fr. McGrath lives this mission everyday.”

Congratulations to the senior class and all of our 2022 award recipients!
