Loyola Academy Science Teacher Serves on Global Jesuit Ecological Task Force

In 2020, the Secretariat for Jesuit Education convened a global task force to create an ecological framework for Jesuit schools. This framework would provide direction and guidance for the Ignatian community as it works together to “care for our common home,” one of the four Universal Apostolic Preferences (UAPs) issued in 2019 to give a ten-year horizon for the whole Society of Jesus. Loyola Academy Science Teacher Mrs. Jennifer Snyder LdM ’90 was named to this global taskforce, an international effort presided over by Fr. José Mesa, SJ, secretary for secondary and pre-secondary education for the Society of Jesus.

Over the course of a year, Mrs. Snyder met with others in the worldwide Jesuit community—from India, Australia, Nigeria, Spain, Columbia, Mexico and Ireland among others—once a month via Zoom to review important documents from the Society of Jesus on the topic of ecology and sustainability including:

They discussed important takeaways from each document and wrote action items to help schools get started, or advance, in their efforts in caring for creation. Ultimately, the taskforce developed an ecological framework for the various stakeholders within school communities—from the administration and governing boards to faculty/staff, students and alumni—to address individual and collective actions we as an Ignatian community can take to heal and restore the earth.
