Ramblers Attend 2022 Chicago March for Life

On Saturday, January 8, a group of Loyola Academy students, accompanied by two faculty chaperones, attended the 2022 March for Life at the Federal Plaza in downtown Chicago. Chaperoning the event, which was open to all students, were Campus Ministers Mr. Paul D. Leon and Rev. Stanislaw Czarnecki, SJ. Due to concerns over the current surge in COVID-19 cases, students only participated in the rally’s outdoor programming.
“This event is an important part of a holistic understanding of faith and justice at Loyola,” says Mr. Leon. ”As part of our Catholic Social Teaching, we affirm the dignity of every human life, whether immigrant, refugee, imprisoned, impoverished, marginalized, disabled or unborn. Participating in the March for Life is an opportunity for Loyola students to live their faith and advocate for justice for some of the most vulnerable members of our society.”

Before marching from the Federal Plaza down Michigan Avenue to the Hilton Chicago, students heard from the following speakers: Cardinal Blase J. Cupich, Illinois State Representative Avery Bourne (95th district), Sr. Alicia Torres, and more.

“This past March for Life will be remembered for the resilience of the attendees to continue demonstrating for justice in the face of freezing cold weather and a widespread pandemic,” says senior attendee Erin Ryan ’22. “I was so honored to hear from the speakers, people from all different backgrounds and ideologies, who were united in support for life. Marching down Michigan Avenue filled me with a sense of awe at the powerful energy the Pro-Life movement has maintained throughout decades. Walking alongside so many young people left me with hope that the messages of the Pro-Life movement will continue to thrive. Marching in the March for Life 2022 was an experience I will never forget.”

It was an important experience for the Ramblers who participated—a day of learning, engagement, and prayerful action. Participating Ramblers were John Phillips ’22, Jasmine Rivera ’24, Erin Ryan ’22, Nick Schallmo ’24, Andrew Sheedy '22, Samuel Soco ’24 and Tommy Thompson-Arjona ’22.
