Virtual College Onsite Day Opens Doors for Chicago Scholars

Held at McCormick Place or Navy Pier in previous years, the 2021 Chicago Scholar Onsite Day was hosted virtually at Loyola Academy on Tuesday, October 26. The day gave all 37 of Loyola’s senior Chicago Scholars, who are academically ambitious, first-generation-to-college students from under-resourced communities, the opportunity to interview with multiple colleges and universities in one day. In total, these 37 students went through 195 interviews with 57 colleges!
“The Chicago Scholar Program is so important to our students because they have the opportunity to be admitted to colleges and receive scholarships early in their senior year, showing them how their hard work pays off,” explains College Counseling Department Chair Mr. Mark Porcaro. “Additionally, selective colleges use the interviews to gain a better understanding of the lives of our students when reviewing them for full cost of attendance scholarships.”

“At Loyola Academy we begin working with our first-generation-to-college students as juniors,” adds College Counselor Mr. Jamie Simon. “Students spend the summer working on applications, essays, creating college lists and meeting guest speakers from partner colleges.”

Based on the success of the Chicago Scholars, Loyola Academy created a comprehensive four year program called Bowman Scholars to begin working with first generation Ramblers as early as the summer before freshman year and continuing through senior year.

While some colleges admitted students on the spot on Tuesday, others will use notes collected about each candidate during the interview to make an admission decision in the spring. Institutions present ranged from those nearby to those on the East Coast and West Coast. A full list of participating colleges and universities is below:
