Milwaukee River Challenge Results
Loyola Academy Varsity Rowing Team opened the 2021 Fall season in Milwaukee where they competed at the Milwaukee River Challenge. They competed against 12 other clubs from around the country. The racecourse was a 3-mile race through downtown. It is a challenging course that puts the coxswain (steerer) and rowers to the test. Both the men and women teams competed in the Jr. 4+ and the Junior 8+.
The race day opened with the Women's Junior Four category, Loyola entered two boats. The first four consisted of Caitlin Langford (Soph), Sofia D'Ascenzo (Jr), Sophia Close (Jr), Kylie Cantore (Jr), Nicolette Giamrusti (Sr), and earned a 6th place finish. The second four consisted of coxswain Carissa Cochico (Jr), Clarissa Caushaj (Jr), Elle Donohue (Soph), Stela Bregu (Soph), and Eleanor King (Jr) came in 9th out 11 boats.
In the Men's Junior Eight category, Loyola entered three boats. The first boat (the 1V) consisted of Senior coxswain Chris Zelinski, Gorman Hugh (Sr), Aleks Walo (Jr), Gus Berne (Jr), Quinn Coleman (Sr), Sean Burden (Sr), Ian Vedder (Soph), Sean Vanegas (Soph), and Carter Smirl (Jr) came in 3rd place just behind New Trier boats. The second boat (the 2V8) consisted of Will Elliot (Soph), Spencer Nelson (Jr), Parker Spalla (Jr), Connor Dickson (Sr), Nick Daigle (Jr), Matt Damsma (Jr), Jack Carroll (Jr), Alex Narey (Soph), John Conant (Soph) came in 9th place. The third boat (3V) was led by coxswain Xaiver Kniffin (Jr), Tommy Shea (Soph), Kyle Clucas (Sr), Aidan Shannon (Sr), Ciaran Heaney (Jr), Ian Elliott (Soph), Grant Retenlny (Soph), David Hiatt (Jr), Ryan McKinney (Jr) came in 12th out of 15 boats.

The first boat (the 1V) consisted of Yanna Grammas (Jr), Sofia D'Ascenzo (Jr), Sophia Close (Jr), Clarissa Caushaj (Jr), Elle Donohue (Soph), Ellie McCain (Jr), Nicolette Giamrusti (Sr), Kylie Cantore (Jr), Eleanor King (Jr) came in 4th place. The second boat (the 2V8) consisted of coxswain Elizabeth Simpson (Jr), Mahelate Tamrat (Jr), Payton Strong (Jr), Maryam Hopps (Jr), Guadalupe Vazquez (Jr), Amanda Rajkovich (Sr), Isabella Chamorro (Jr), Grace Baio (Soph), and Malee Garza came in 9th place. The third boat (3V) consisted of Tina Barone (Jr), Nina Sperling (Sr), Julia Narkun (Jr), Haley Castelar (Jr), Leila Rodriguez (Jr), Sophia Tavoularis (Soph), Margot Burm (Soph), Izzy Silva (Soph), Diana Moreno (Jr) came in 13th place out of 15 boats.
The day last race of the day was in the Men's Junior Four category where Loyola entered two boats. The first four consisted of Nora Flannery (Sr), Spencer Nelson (Jr), Joey Malloy (Sr), Tommy LaFromboise (Sr), Jeremy Bertronski (Sr) came in 6th. The second four consisted of Xaiver Kniffin (Jr), Aidan Shannon (Sr), Will Anthony (So), Giancarlo Sclafani (Sr), and Jack Reichenback (Sr) came in 9th out 11 boats.
