Loyola Academy Merits Recognition in This Year’s Newhouse Architecture and Design Contest

Due to the Covid-19 pandemic, there was no social gathering to celebrate and acknowledge this year’s winning student entries in the 39th annual Newhouse Architecture and Design Contest sponsored by the Chicago Architecture Center. This contest inspires high school-aged students from the metropolitan Chicago area to create solutions to very specific site problems. This year’s emphasis highlights the City of Chicago’s new INVEST South/West Initiative by concentrating students’ efforts on projects that improve the quality of life on the city’s south and west sides.
Now in the 39th year of this annual contest, winners were chosen by a panel of expert designers, educators and architects and once notified they will be expected to respond to their recognition via Zoom. In this Zoom telecast, each student is to explain the concept behind his or her design.

The official report is expected by June 15, 2021. However, as the Chicago Architecture Center has already made results known to students, we preliminarily congratulate the following:

Reagan Butler ’21: 3rd Prize in the Open Design + Build Division of the 2021 Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition. Notes from the judging panel:
  • “The purpose of the project is clearly defined. I appreciate the honesty in the Reflection portion.”
Andrew Emerson ’21 and Owen Mathes ’21: 3rd Prize in the Advanced Architecture Division of the 2021 Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition. Notes from the judging panel:
  • “What I really liked is that this house is a radical departure from the traditional homes that are on this block--this is not a criticism, it is praise. I think this home would improve the community to show that new investment in these neighborhoods can improve them.”
  • “Great design cycle and reflection essay—very informative.”
  • “The plan is very nice and thought out, the spaces flow throughout the house.”
William Cassady '21: 2nd place in the Advanced Architecture Division of the 2021 Newhouse Architecture + Design Competition.

The students will receive their prize pack and their placement and participation certificates by mail, within 2–3 weeks after the Zoom interview.

Named after late Illinois Senator Richard Newhouse, the Newhouse Architecture and Design Competition gives students an opportunity to practice design thinking and 21st century skills like creativity, critical thinking, collaboration and communication. It inspires teens to understand why design matters by researching, representing and redesigning the built environment to solve challenges that are communal and place-based. To learn more, click here
