The Class of 1954 Celebrates 65th Reunion

Members of the Class of 1954 gathered on the evening of June 12 to celebrate their 65th Loyola Academy reunion. Together with classmates, family and friends, 1954 alumni—some traveling from California, Tennessee and Kentucky—celebrated Mass at the beautiful Madonna della Strada Chapel on Loyola University’s lake shore campus and then enjoyed dinner and drinks.
Hosting the reunion on the campus of Loyola University Chicago in Rogers Park was especially meaningful for this class. Since its founding in 1909, Loyola Academy had been located on LUC’s campus at Dumbach Hall. Loyola’s move to its current Wilmette campus didn’t occur until 1957, making the return to Rogers Park a familiar trip down memory lane.

In addition to long lasting friendships, Jim Seeberg ’54 says the age of email and social media have made it easier for classmates to keep a certain level of interest and closeness.

“Emailing timely updates about a classmate's movement, accomplishments, illnesses, deaths, etc. keeps our classmates and their family somewhat interested and relevant to one's own circumstances,” Seeberg says. “There is a comfort zone created by this occasional word interplay. We have kept it simple, non judgmental, informational and sincere.”

The strength of the the Class of 1954’s bond rests on years of dedication and commitment to one another. “As our classmates began to retire and their kids were dispersed, the idea of meeting for breakfast once a month became appealing and is still continued today for those guys who were, and have remained, local,” explains Seeberg. “Those simple contacts keep dialogue and information flowing about classmates not attending regularly or at all.”

From this monthly breakfast meeting emerged the idea of an annual Christmas party hosted at Hackney's, which is now in its 12th year. It’s a wonderful tradition with no signs of slowing down any time soon.

“We are grateful for their commitment to each other and their passion for Loyola’s mission 65 years later,” says Vice President for Alumni and Network Engagement Marty Jennings ’98.
