This past weekend, the crew team had four boats compete in the Scholastic National Championships in New Jersey. The teams did very well, with the girls' Varsity 1 boat finishing 4th in the nation, the girls' Varsity 2 boat finishing 2nd in the nation, the boys' Varsity 1 boat finishing 9th in the nationand the boys' 1V Petite boat placing 3rd. The boys' JV boat put together some good races, but were unable to make it to the finals.
The boys' varsity really had some great races and were very close to making the Grand Final. They rowed in the Petite Final which is rowed to determine places 7–12 in the regatta. They finished third in that race, making them 9th overall in a field on 30 invited varsity boats. This was the best showing for the boys at Nationals since 2001 on the varsity level.
The girls' second varsity was seeded #1 going into the regatta. They won their heat and semi final races. They put together a good race in the final and came in second behind a New Trier boat that was actually faster than their varsity. While the boat was unhappy with the result, placing second at the national championships is a great result and the best finish we have had in the second varsity level.
The varsity girls had a remarkable first two races, winning their heat and semi final, before extreme bad luck hit them in the Grand Final. One of our rowers jumped off her seat on the first stroke which is an unfortunate, but somewhat common, occurrence. The seat eventually came off the tracks and was useless. Despite not having a seat, the rower continued to row as hard as she could for the entire race and did a great job of making the best of a horrible situation. The boat placed fourth, which is still an impressive finish at Nationals.
